And so they got FDA approval for Paolo to do the surgery in Illinois, and they got him a special medical license to do the surgery in Illinois. She is also the CEO of Berraca Productions, a company she founded to further her advocacy work empowering women who are the survivors of fraud. And spent months, you know, this did not happen overnight. [00:03:01] Benita: Yeah, one of the ones um, there was a father in New Jersey, whose wife had abducted their son to Brazil, parental abduction, which is when one parent takes the child, against the other parent's will to another country. And that's where we met for the first time. Elton John was going to be performing. My friends and my family all adored him. I had to expose him.". This was, I didn't even know what to say. [00:24:20] Bo Lindquist: When we made our initial agreement to, to start filming, he said that his uh, personal life would be out of bounds, and I mean a bit odd that, that we couldn't even talk about where he went to school or, or something like that, but why should we? Benita and Macchiarini's wild relationship was featured in a special episode of ABC's 20/20 on Friday. She did what she had to but never let it take over her life, which in turn helped her graduate magna cum laude from Wayne State University in 1987. None of the promises Alexander said her fianc Paolo Macchiarini had made for their wedding day would come true. Alexander had already sent invitations to her closed ones. What to tell her. Moreover, the Italian investigator found records showing that despite planning a wedding with Alexander for so long, Macchiarini was still legally married. So this is not really out of the realm of possibility that he would have contacts at the Vatican. These were made in a lab out of the very same plastic that a soda bottle is made out of, and then he would bathe this in the patient's own stem cells in something called a bioreactor, and then transplant that, this plastic windpipe into people. Paolo says to me, "I want to take over the wedding planning and I want to surprise you with everything. [00:15:45] Benita: There was a particular moment when my ex-husband had gone into a coma, and I was in Illinois, and I was, I was um, very upset about everything and trying to figure out a way, I was talking to Paolo about trying to figure out what to do and how to say goodbye, and uh crying about the fact that I hadn't been able to say goodbye. While Macchiarini continued to deny any wrongdoing, he lost his job at the Institute and Swedish prosecutors began looking into whether his behavior was criminal. We were sitting together on the, on the plane, and I just sort of started pouring my heart out to him, and he was a very good friend. [00:35:01] Matthew Christopher: No, no, just her friends who are so much fun. As a journalist, Alexander knew she couldn't get involved with the subject of her story. You know, the equivalent of going to a drugstore and buying whatever, you, they, the idea is ultimately we'll get to the point that, you know, you have a failing organ or you lose a body part, you just order up a new one. [00:25:58] Bo Lindquist: I think he liked the challenge. And she was Daddy's Little Girl. "None of these people were coming," Benita said she tragically discovered. And so it was kind of the perfect case for us to focus our story around. "That's when he told me that there was this kind of clandestine network [of doctors] who are on call, basically, for these people.'". I mean it was crazy. I want to focus on work. And Hillary Clinton got involved, different people in Congress got involved, but ultimately, after many trips back and forth to Brazil and a lot of emotion, he got his son home. If I had a checklist, he, he was everything I would want in a partner, everything you would want in a man. What did he do this time?" And so now his son, who I think was about 8 or 9 at the time, was in Brazil with her family, and he was engaged in this very difficult and complicated fight to try and get his son back, and such a loving father. When she continued to press Macchiarini about the pope, she said he blamed Vatican politics, alleging that the more conservative former Pope Benedict went behind Pope Francis' back to stop him from officiating the wedding. Macchiarini proposed to Alexander on Christmas Day in 2013. Benita is the Executive Producer of the documentary film, He Lied About Everything, which premiered in the U.S. in 2018 on Investigation Discovery, and continues to be broadcast around the world. But Bo at the time had no idea who it was. I also believe that exposing what happened, and exposing him, might keep him from hurting others. His work, if controversial, is also groundbreaking. But at this point, they're just questions. And then um, (sigh) oh her sisters, the two bridesmaids, and then two flower girl dresses. And he came to visit us in Australia, and I was just, I was only 8, but I was ab--, absolutely infatuated with what he was doing and asked him all these questions. I'm never viewed like that, but I was definitely like, huh? "I talked to my editors and we started thinking, 'Well, let's just keep pulling on this thread. I had tried, at one point I pushed him away, and we didn't see each other for about three months. Paolo had actually told her that Pope Francis would be officiating their wedding and that celebrities such as Elton John, the Clintons, the Obamas, and the Beckhams, among many others, would be in attendance, and shed somehow believed him. [00:42:58] Bob: If you have been targeted by a scam or fraud, you are not alone. And so I did, you know, I sat back, and even when I was tempted to ask questions, I didn't. He was, he was just there when I needed somebody. [00:25:49] Bob: But, and this made him a fun interview, he doesn't mind debating his controversial techniques. Both have covered Macchiarini in their work. "He said he was having trouble finding a priest to marry us," she said. It does make it difficult sometimes, because you, some stories are so heavy and so difficult, and I would sometimes, it would take me weeks sometimes to sort of shake a story, and people would sit with me, and their stories would sit with me for a long, long time. Since her romance with Paolo imploded in 2015, the brunette beauty has continued working on documentaries and docuseries. She said that in November 2014, they had planned a trip to California to spend Thanksgiving with her family, "and he had been really stressed in the weeks before, and he had been talking to me for some time about how there were people that were against him, and his 'enemies.'". [00:04:24] Benita: Right, yeah, and they're not always happy endings, and you do, you, unfortunately, you know, you report on a lot of very, very difficult things in news. [00:36:00] Matthew Christopher: On Valentine's Day, I met him. It was going to be this four-day event in Rome, you know, with a red carpet event the night before the wedding, and a big brunch the day after the wedding, and people bought plane tickets, they bought fancy, you know, red carpet attire for this wedding. [00:21:08] Bob: Benita is proud of her work and happy with her husband-to-be, excited to put the finishing touches on Hannah's medical miracle story, but before the piece airs, the story takes a dark turn. Her new podcast "Benita and the Berracas," will feature Benita talking to other women who open up to her about their own love conned stories, along with advice on how to avoid becoming a victim. So just under two months before the wedding, and it was just difficult. In September 2020, Swedish prosecutors announced charges against Macchiarini for aggravated assault in connection to three surgeries that he had performed at the Karolinska University Hospital, including Cetir's. He was put on trial after his patients reportedly suffered bodily harm during his experimental surgeries but he always denied any criminal wrongdoing. "He was a top doctor, he spoke six or seven languages. "That wasn't true. Emmy Award Winning . "I went full on into investigator mode as I knew he wouldnt tell me the truth," Benita said. And so he took me on his motorcycle along the Illinois River. Um, she was being brought to Illinois, the Children's Hospital of Illinois because a Korean nurse there had found Hannah in the hospital in Seoul and had sort of lobbied to bring her to the US. Meanwhile, the investigation into Macchiarini's professional life was ramping up -- the Karolinska Institute was investigating whether he'd fabricated aspects of his medical research. And Paolo had said to me, "You, you need to find a way to say good-bye to him," and he said, "I'll help you." And that presence was really something, it was really something. [00:21:22] Benita: Tragically, Hannah passed away, which was, um, just devastating. And he was not doing well, and I was really struggling with the fact that I was about to become a single mother. With the celebrations set to last four days, Alexander had her dress designer make four different gowns. [00:01:54] Bob: Benita didn't start her career working for a larger network in New York. And these were all couples that were quote-unquote living in sin, you know, they had children out of wedlock, or whatever. "It said that he had a normal functioning airway," Corbascio said. I mean it was, I felt butterflies, you know. [00:01:28] Benita: I grew up in Australia, and I had an uncle, my mother's brother, who worked for Radio Free Europe. And, and then he would tell me the priest won't marry us, and this went on and on and on. In fact, the scientist was embroiled in lawsuits and accusations at work. I didn't even, I, I, I stopped in hesitation. In the course of that operation, the surgeons had nicked her trachea. "The woman in Barcelona was not his wife.
